Walk for Shelter

Put on your walking shoes and join Welcome House on Good Friday, April 2nd 2010 for the 19th Annual Walk for Shelter.  The walk will start and finish at Peace Dale Congregational Church, located at 261 Columbia St. Peace Dale, RI

Registration begins at 8:30am and the walk will start at 9:00am.  The route covers Wakefield and Peace Dale via Kingstown Road, Main Street, and High Street, and returning to Columbia Street.  Welcome House hopes to recruit 200 or more walkers this year and raise $10,000 to support its programs which assist residents of the shelter as well as individuals and families living in transitional housing.

Awards will be given to the first to finish the walk, the cutest pet, and the team and individual who collect the most pledges.  Participants raising $100 or more in pledges will receive a complimentary T-Shirt.  Students seeking to fulfill community service requirements can participate in the walk and will be eligible to receive a certificate verifying their involvement in this fundraiser event for Welcome House for four hours of community service.

How to get started:  Pledge forms can be picked up from Welcome House or contact Welcome House to have pledge forms sent to you.  If you wish, you can also collect pledges and fill out a form the day of the walk.

Every little bit counts and each donation can bring us one step closer to ending homelessness.

For more than twenty four years, the Welcome House of South County has provided emergency shelter, transitional apartments, and a variety of services to the residents of Washington County without alternative housing options.  The Annual Walk for Shelter represents a major fundraising effort, and allows South County residents an opportunity to acknowledge that the work of Welcome House is truly important and supported by the community.  The 2010 Walk for Shelter is especially important as it raises awareness about the lack of affordable housing in South County, as well as provides financial support that is greatly needed for Welcome House to meet increasing operating costs and an increase in demand for services.
