Transitional & Permanent
Housing
Welcome House of South County has a Transitional
Housing Program designated for individuals and
families that are currently homeless. The following
are requirements in order to qualify
to be in our program:
- Must be able to show proof of homelessness
(eviction notice or documentation from homeless shelter)
- Must be sober for at least 90 days and maintain
sobriety.
- Must be enrolled in an educational program
(GED,
college etc)
or working in a job with some upward
mobility.
- Must have an income (SSI, SSDI, employment)
- Must have personal goals (long term and short term)
- Must be willing to work with a case manager from
Welcome House during their stay.
- The main goal for our Transitional housing participants
must be self-sufficiency after two years of service
and case management.
We have three Transitional units for male and female
individuals who are currently in sobriety (Sober
Houses). The 3 units hold a total of 10
people. Each person pays a reduced fee for rent and
meets with a Case manager at least once a week and
will meet with the Transitional Housing Coordinator
at least twice a month. These meetings help us to
assist each person with their personal goals and
give us the opportunity to assess each person on
an individual basis. Welcome House is a referral
agency and may be able to help those in
our program with mental health issues, medical, job
placement and continuing education.
We have six units for Transitional (homeless) families additionally;
we have six supported permanent family units and
three Thresholds units, which are specifically for
psychiatrically impaired singles and families. The
guidelines above are followed for singles as well
as families. We also mandate that all children under
the age of 18 be enrolled in school. The families’ rent
is based on the HOME HUD guidelines
for South Kingstown and all utilities are included
in the rent. Other referrals for families may include
parenting classes, budgeting, daycare placement and
assistance in applying for permanent affordable housing
for the future.
The staff and Board of Directors
of Welcome House believe that there is a reason why
people become homeless. It may be from substance
abuse, addictions, mental health, domestic violence
or poor decision-making on the individual's part.
Our program is designed to give people the opportunity
to become self-sufficient
with the help of professional staff. A
promise to our supportive community is to not allow
any person in our program who has a criminal history
of sexual assault, pedophilia or arson. This is
for the safety of our community, our guests and
our staff.
